What is tempered glass?

Tempered glass: a term perhaps unfamiliar to you. This is a type of glass, which is very sturdy. But what makes this type of glass so special? In this blog, we will explain to you briefly and powerfully what exactly tempered glass is, what advantages it offers and why it is ideal for engraving with a logo or design.

What is tempered glass?

Tempered glass, also known as tempered glass, is glass that is first heated and then quickly cooled. This makes it extra strong. During this process, the glass is heated to around 650 °C and then quickly cooled. This creates tension in the glass that makes the material four to five times stronger than ordinary glass.

When toughened glass breaks, it shatters into small, rounded pieces instead of sharp shards. This makes it safer to use, especially in places where glasses are often dropped or used intensively, such as restaurants, canteens or at events.

An additional advantage is that toughened glass is much more resistant to heat and temperature fluctuations. Think of hot drinks, quick rinses in the dishwasher or outdoor use on the terrace. Thanks to these properties, toughened glass is a favourite among professionals who opt for both safety and durability.

What are the advantages of toughened glass?

Why should you choose toughened glass? Here are a few strong reasons:

  • Extra strong: much less likely to break if bumped or dropped.
  • Safe: breaks into blunt pieces, reducing the risk of injury.
  • Heat-resistant: suitable for hot drinks and the dishwasher.
  • Durable: lasts longer, so fewer replacements and lower costs.

So for busy environments, tempered glass is a smart and responsible choice. Whether coffee mugs in the office or drinking glasses in a restaurant: toughened glass makes a difference.

What are the printing options for toughened glass?

Printing toughened glass with a logo? Definitely possible, provided you apply the right technique. Engraving toughened glass is recommended. Normal transfer or screen printing is not possible on toughened glass, as the glass cannot be heated twice. There is a difficult chemical process behind this. When drinking, touching hot coffee or tea can then break the glass. This is dangerous and we want to prevent it. That is why we do recommend toughened glass engraving.

The result? A scratch-proof engraving that can withstand dishwashers, heat and daily use. So your logo remains visible, even after hundreds of washes. Ideal for the office and for the catering industry.

Please note that toughened glass can be printed using 2-component ink. The print is then not scratch-proof and not dishwasher-safe. Engraving is therefore the best option. We will be happy to advise you on this.

Summary

Toughened glass is strong, safe, heat-resistant and durable - exactly what you need in a professional environment. Moreover, it offers plenty of opportunities for high-quality and wear-resistant engraving.
