Which drinking glasses go with which drinks?
Which glasses are all in your cupboard? There are undoubtedly a lot of them. What types of glasses are there? And which drinks do the glasses go with? Each type of beer requires a different beer glass. The same goes for wine glasses. There are so many types of glasses that this legitimate question may be answered: which drinking glasses go with which drinks? We explain it to you in this blog!
What types of beer glasses are there?
That there are many types of beer is well known. A logical reasoning then, is that there are also many types of beer glasses. And that's absolutely right! There are very many different types of beer glasses:
- Whistle. This is the most common beer glass. A whistle is a thin, slim and relatively small glass. This is where lager is poured, for example Heineken, Amstel, Grolsch or Hertog Jan. Because the glass is narrow, the carbon dioxide content is retained for longer, which ensures a refreshing taste.
- Vase/boerke. The vase has the same function as a flute, but is slightly larger and has a conical shape. This gives the beer a slightly fuller head and slightly more space for its aromas to be released.
- Beer mug. A beer mug is also used for draught beer, especially during Oktoberfest and among student associations. The sturdy handle makes it easy to drink large quantities of beer without the heat of your hands heating up the drink too quickly.
- Specialty beer glasses. There are many different types of special beer glasses, such as Weizen beer glasses. Special beer glasses are designed to make the most of the unique flavours and aromas of beers such as IPAs, tripels and stouts.
- Sommelier glasses, chalices and tulips. Speciality beers often have unique glasses that enhance the aromas and flavours of the beer. A tulip glass, for example, ensures that the aroma of the beer remains concentrated, enhancing the taste experience.

What types of wine glasses are there?
Wines come in a variety of colours, aromas and flavours. Every wine is entitled to a matching glass. So what makes a glass for white wine appropriate for white wine? Why is red wine served in a different glass? There is a lot to explain about the different types of wine glasses.
- Red wine glasses belong with red wines because the glasses are larger and more convex. Red wine should 'breathe' and have maximum contact with the air. This benefits the flavour of red wine. The larger the glass, the more oxygen reaches the wine, which contributes to a more complex flavour development.
- White wine glasses are slightly narrower and smaller. This is because white wine has a less complex flavour than red wine and therefore needs less contact with the air. The narrower glass allows the fresh acids and aromas to be better preserved.
- Rosé glasses are often the same as white wine glasses because rosé has the same characteristics in terms of flavour development. A thinner glass helps bring out the fruity notes better.
- Champagne glasses with a long, narrow chalice hold the bubbles longer and make for a festive toast. Many flutes have a slight unevenness in the chalice, which makes the bubbles appear to rise from a single point. This makes drinking sparkling wine extra sparkling and visually appealing.

What types of water and soft drink glasses are there?
Water and soft drinks can also be poured in vastly different types of glasses. Therefore, it is good to distinguish these from each other as well. What types of water glasses and soft drink glasses are there?
- Tumbler. These are usually low and wider glasses, perfect for water, juices and soft drinks. The wide opening makes it easy to add ice cubes and slices of lemon or mint for extra refreshment. This makes tumblers ideal!
- Long drink glasses. Tall, straight glasses often used for soft drinks, juices and mixed drinks. The generous capacity makes a long drink glass ideal for drinks served with lots of ice.
- Water glasses. These are often simple, sturdy glasses without decorations. In restaurants, you often see sturdy glasses with a thick bottom for water. This provides extra stability and prevents the glass from tipping over easily.
- Cola glasses. Specially designed glasses with a slightly curved shape, often used for soft drinks such as cola. The shape ensures that the bubbles are retained longer and the drink does not lose its fizzy freshness.
What types of coffee and tea glasses are there?
Hot drinks are best served in glasses specially designed to hold the temperature.
- Espresso glasses. Small glasses specially designed for the intense taste of espresso. They often have a thick bottom to retain the heat longer.
- Cappuccino glasses. Wide glasses with a thin wall, allowing the layers of milk and coffee to remain clearly visible.
- Tea glasses. Often cylindrical glasses with an ear, popular for herbal teas and other hot drinks. Some are double-walled for extra insulation.
What types of stackable glasses are there?
For efficient use in catering and households, there are stackable glasses:
- Stackable beer glasses. Ideal for pubs and events where space saving is important.
- Stackable soft drink glasses. Usually conically shaped, so they fit together easily.
- Stackable coffee and tea glasses. Double-walled varieties are sometimes also stackable to save space.
