Which beer glass matches which beer?

As many types of beer as there are, so many different beer glasses there are. This is because the shape of the glass affects the smell and taste of the beer. You won't notice it in the pub, but it's really true! For optimal drinking pleasure, it is therefore important to choose the right beer glass. You have glasses that can be used for many different types of beer, but also beer glasses for specific speciality beers. But which beer glass fits which beer exactly? We have listed it for you in a handy overview.

The perfect glass for every beer

Seven of the most popular and well-known beer glasses are listed below, along with a concise description of the beer that best suits the glass!

'Fluitje'

The 'fluitje' (is dutch) is one of the best-known beer glasses and, especially within the on-trade. This is a small, slender glass, straight or slightly curved, in which various pilsners or lagers are poured or tapped. The shape of the glass keeps the foam layer of the beer or lager intact for longer. This makes the fluitje ideal for light, crisp beers.

Tulip

A tulip is a very versatile beer glass. As the name suggests, this glass has a tulip-shaped chalice and it features a base with stem. The shape allows for a nice head of foam and the convexity of the chalice retains aromas well. Therefore, the tulip is particularly suitable for darker, flavourful beers such as Belgian beers. Pils, wheat beer or weizen, on the other hand, are better not served in this.

Weizen

The weizen beer glass is specially designed for German weizen beers. These are long, narrow glasses with a narrowing at the bottom. This narrowing not only ensures a nice grip on the glass, but also allows a nice head to form on the beer, thus better preserving its taste. Weizen beers look best in these glasses.

Chalice / goblet

Belgian beers, such as trappist, abbey beer, double or triple, are mainly served in a chalice or goblet. A chalice has a convex shape, which allows the aromas and flavours of these beers to be properly expressed. Moreover, a goblet has a stem, so the beer stays at temperature better when you hold the glass by the stem. This makes the chalice perfect for rich, complex beers.

Vase

A vase, also known in the Netherlands as an Amsterdammertje, is a practical, conical glass. Some vases are also available stackable, quite handy! Like the fluitje, the vase is frequently used to pour pilsners. The simple shape makes the glass versatile and suitable for daily use.

Sommelier

The special sommelier glass is specially designed for tasting and judging various types of beer, with pilsners and lagers being the only exceptions. This glass has a stronger bulge than the tulip to lock in the aromas even better and a wide drinking rim. In addition, the glass is often embossed on the bottom, which keeps the head nice. Another option for the sommelier glass is a TEKU glass, which has almost the same shape.

Mugs

And last but not least: the well-known beer mug. This large beer glass is often used at Oktoberfests. A mug is a large, robust glass that usually holds half a litre (or more!) of beer. A major advantage is that a tankard can take a beating, so it can be toasted to your heart's content and with passion. German lagers, märzen, Belgian white beers and of course Oktoberfest beers taste best in a tankard.
