Why a CE mark on a glass is useful

On the terrace, you drink a delicious beer. With a nice sun on your face, you take a sip of that beer. You take a closer look at the glass and notice a CE mark on it. What is a CE mark and why should you have it printed on a glass? You'll read about it in this blog!

What is a CE mark?

CE stands for "Conformité Européenne", which is French for "European conformity". If there is a CE mark on a product, it means that the product complies with European regulations. On some products, CE marking is mandatory. Think of electronic devices, machines, toys, measuring instruments, etc.

You can also put a CE mark on glasses. You can think of a glass as a measuring instrument. That's why a number of EU countries (including Germany and formerly the UK) require glasses in the catering industry to be CE marked. If you see a CE mark on a glass, the glass complies with European legislation.

What does a CE mark look like on a glass?

A CE mark on a glass consists of five parts:

  • The CE mark.
  • The name of the manufacturer of the glassware.
  • A rectangle with the year of glass manufacture and an 'M' in front of it. The 'M' stands for manufacture. So, for example, if it says M23 on the glass, the glass was manufactured in 2023.
  • The number of the inspection body. This is a four-digit code.
  • And finally the measurement line with the capacity measure, so for example 30cl.

What is the advantage of a CE mark on a glass?

A legitimate question: why have a CE mark printed on your glass? OK, in some countries it is compulsory to serve glasses with a CE mark in the hospitality industry. But why do it in a country where it is not compulsory, like the Netherlands?

  1. An insurance policy for the guest

When a guest orders a beer in a restaurant, he expects it to be a good beer and to be served the right amount. If he orders a 30-cl beer, he should expect to receive it. If the glass has a CE mark, the guest is assured that it is the right quantity. This is because it has been checked by an EU-approved body.

  1. The hotel and catering business saves money

Because, as a hospitality business, you always tap the beer to the measure line, you make sure you always tap enough and not too much. This way, you save money and waste less beer. Good for your wallet and for the world!

Something for your catering business?

Such a CE mark is still quite handy, isn't it? The CE mark on glasses shows that you are a professional business and you can guarantee your guests that they will get the right amount of the drink.
